Cutting the Cord

So how many of you caught my mention of us no longer having cable in my last post?
Yup, we officially disconnected our cable network at the beginning of the month.  We realized all we were watching were mindless reality shows and paying out the butt for it!  So we cut the cord and subscribed for Netflix and Hulu Plus!  So far...it's been great!  But we do miss our local channels for news and sports.  That's when a friend of ours introduced us to Mohu.
Live Sports
They specialize in indoor and outdoor HDTV antennas.  Our friend has the Mohu Leaf. It's as thin as a sheet of paper and double sided... one is black, they other white for decor purposes.
You can either hang it on the wall with push pins, lay it on the ground of attach it to the back of the tv with provided velcro tabs.  Of course, being an antenna, part of the setup is to find the optimal site to hang it so that you get as many channels as possible.  They have more advanced antenna that allow for more channels, but for now I think the basic Leaf will fit our needs.

With this antenna, one would have access to local channels for free!  And in amazing HD quality!  Not to mention he got over 40 channels too! It sounded too good to be true, but after viewing our friends channels we were blown away by the clarity!  So I ordered ours last week!  It was only $39.99 with free shipping...and that's a one time fee!  We'll see how it looks for us and then look into ordering another for the tv upstairs.

Have any of you considered getting rid of your cable?  I won't lie, it was hard at first.  But now I have two or three shows that I follow on Netflix and Hulu Plus.  The rest I forgot about...and spend more time with the family.  I will be glad to get Good Morning America back in the mornings though! :)
Stay tuned for my product review!

  2. We got rid if cable at the end of January. I will admit, I miss The Real Housewives of any city but other than that, we are completely fine! I find that In watching less tv now because local channels aren't as accessible to me! We are saving some money and spending more time as a family. It's a win-win!

    1. It is a win-win! It's crazy how much time I realized I spent with the tv on for white noise.

  3. My husband and I have been on basic cable for... I think a good year now? For the same reason: feeding our minds with junk and paying for it. The only reason why we're still on any cable at all is because of the internet. Otherwise, we spend the vast majority of our TV time on Netflix. And when we do watch TV it's usually for the news and shows like The Big Bang Theory, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Office, and Court TV shows, all of which we can catch online or on Netflix.

So what are you doing for internet access???

    1. Our cable and internet are separate. We still have our high speed internet, just not cable tv. Aren't yours separate?

    2. Aaaaah. No our internet and cable are bundled. Bummer. Will chat with the husband about this then.

    3. Him... yeah, ours were "bundled" cable and internet...we had the option for a phone as well. See if you can just have one service.

  4. That thing looks COOL!!
We got rid of cable a while back and just had internet and phone for like 3 years. I just watched TV on the internet. we used the hdmi cable to attach the computer to the TV and voila!!
Since we moved last April, we've had cable again since with our internet/phone/cable package here it was only $9 less without it.

    1. Oh you got a steal for your cable! Our bill is about $70 less now that we're just internet!

  5. My husband's considered it but I'm holding out! A lot of people are making that move these days. I better NOT tell him about this cable device or else he'll snatch it away for sure.

  7. Kathy,

We cut the cord almost four years ago. One of those years was w/o television completely. I was hesitant to bring service back into the house after that year. We have been using AppleTV and also subscribe to Netflix, Hulu Plus! and Amazon Prime. My children have enjoyed watching a lot of the family-friendly progamming I viewed when I was younger.

    1. My husband and I are both enjoying some of our old cartoons too! It's funny since lil A is too young to pay attention. :)

  8. Wow...impressive. I wish we could but we just signed a 2-year deal for cable, phone and internet so I guess we are stuck with Verizon for a while.

On another note, is your coffee table glass? Just wondering how your little one does with that. I was thinking we might need to get a non-glass coffee table but if we don't have to, I wouldn't mind sticking with what we have for now. Do let me know. Thanks!

    1. We do have one coffee table that is a glass top. It's old and if he does happen to break it, it won't break my heart. We just keep an eye on him and don't let him slam toys on it. It's in the living room...where we don't spend a lot of time in, but he likes playing with the decor (wooden balls) that I have on display on it. :)

    2. OK. Thanks. We'll hold on to ours until she shows any signs of breaking the glass. I am not too worried about it breaking. I am more worried about her getting hurt if it breaks. But I guess that's part of keeping an eye on her.

    3. Exactly. A lot of people are afraid to have glass in the house, but you really need to be keeping an eye on your kid and watching their habits. A no longer cares for the glass in the house because we didn't restrict him or we steered him away with a toy. He still uses glass bottles (holds on his own) and we haven't had any breaks. :)

  9. I would get rid of it because all I watch is Netflix nowadays but Sean is into watching the news so I don't think he'll agree. But it would save us so much money in the long rub. Hmm. I think I'll discuss with him.

  10. Wait? Sean would be able to watch the news with that thing?!

    1. Yup... he sure can! Local stations only though.

  11. I don`t have cable either, but unfortunately that has somehow resulted in my watching MORE tv rather than less, because now I download my shows and can watch them whenever I want :P

  12. Yes, I did catch that you mentioned no cable and completely forgot to ask you about it. I'm not thinking that that would ever be an option unless NFL Sunday Ticket went internet but for all other shows, it seems ideal. We don't watch much of anything but we do think the history channel. (We're old.) I'm interested to see how it goes for you.

    1. Yeah, for the sports fanatics... it isn't the ideal situation yet. Luckily Matt only watches some football games. If he really wants to see a game that we won't have, he'll go to a friends or a sports bar.
